Someone once asked me: Would we still use Facebook if Instagram was to come before it.
This article will answer that question to a good extent, we will be outlining the user base and engagement rate of both social networking platform.
How Facebook was created
Facebook was set up in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and 4 of his fellow Harvard roommates, most of them are now angel investors including Mark. It was set up primarily for students to upload details about themselves and link up with each other.
Every one of them contributed $1,000 each and Mark coded the platform and called it: “The Facebook”. It is now a multinational worth more than 100 billion dollars.
Who created Instagram?
Instagram, on the other hand, was set up by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in 2010, it was made exclusively for IOS devices, and it became a hub for celebrities to showcase lifestyle. In April 3, 2012, Instagram was released for Android users and downloads exceeded 7 million in less than a week. As at August 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion dollars.
Facebook vs Instagram
Today’s article will expose which platform users engage more and well also find out which gender associates more on each platform. We’ll look at the User’s growth rate, User’s engagement rate and user’s satisfaction derived from each product.
The end goal is to answer the question: “Would we still use Facebook if Instagram was to come before it.”
Facebook vs Instagram: User growth
Facebook had 1.5 billion users in 2014 and the figure grew to 2.3 billion which shows that Facebook has had an 80% user growth rate since that period.
Instagram, on the other hand, had about 500 million users as of 2014 and in 2018 were estimated to have 1 billion users, which is a 50% recorded growth rate since 2014.
Facebook clearly wins this round and have been able to increase followers at nearly 100% in the last 5 years despite all the scandals they had. Some of these users could be a duplicate, but nonetheless, Facebook user growth has been tremendous against all odds.
Facebook vs Instagram: User Engagement Rate
This segment will look at the monthly user figures of both in relation to their current user population. According to statista.com as at 2018 Facebook had 2.2 billion active users on a monthly basis. Instagram, on the other hand, had 1 billion users on a monthly basis in 2018.
Facebook has more than 80% of its user active, while Instagram has about 84.23% users posting on feeds and 79% post on their stories. It’s hard to determine the winner of this round. You decide.
Facebook vs Instagram: User satisfaction
We may sound subjective in this round, you should know our views are not biased in any way. Facebook had many scandals in 2018 and many governments had resorted to banning the service.
A few like China have succeeded but other European countries have not been able to and users in those countries still utilize the platforms.
Despite all, the social media platform is still highly utilized; users of Facebook spend at least 50 minutes on Facebook daily.
Instagram, on the other hand, has had one scandal because of their ads and several petitions written against certain modifications on the platform, Instagram users spend an average of 53 minutes on the platform daily. Other sources say Instagram users use at least 68 minutes every day.
Those figures might just be true because a report says that Users are more addicted to Instagram than they are to Facebook and all other social media.
Facebook seems to have a larger user base but, over time users have engaged more on Instagram, a picture uploaded on IG had more than 4 million engagements and the highest followed on social media is Selena Gomez on Instagram who has 130+ million followers, whilst the highest followed page on Facebook is Christiano Ronaldo who has 122.1 million likes.
All these show that users utilize Instagram more than other social networks. I think we can now answer the question that was asked before.
