GUCCI VS VERSACE: Italian Powerhouses
Today we are going all the way to the “Bel Paese” (Beautiful Country): Italy. Home to the ruins of the old superpower and now its capital city: Rome.
We’ll be looking at fashion powerhouses, globally worn designers and Africa’s most respected fashion brands; Guccio Gucci (Popularly known as Gucci) and Gianni Versace S.p.A. (Popularly known as Versace). They are both Italian fashion designers and they specialize in producing luxury goods.
Gucci is an Italian fashion brand that produces luxury goods; it was founded by Guccio Gucci in 1921 and is one of the top global brands. They are producers and manufacturers of high-end leather goods, clothing, and several other fashion products. It was one of the few fashion brands that survived the turmoil of World War 2 and was recognized as one of the top 100 most valuable brands by Forbes magazine.
Versace is also an Italian luxury brand that produces fashion goods: It was founded by Gianni Versace in 1978, it is has caused many speculations and rumors because of its Logo; Medusa. Gianni Versace chose the logo because of Medusa made people fall in love and stay with her; he hoped that would be the same with Versace. Well, that logo has definitely served its purpose.
Today we want to check the two brands and let you come out with your favorite.
GUCCI VS VERSACE: BRAND POPULARITY
The best way to know the popularity of a fashion brand is to check how much impact its products have made and how many celebrities it has brought to light.
Gucci was popularly worn by Rihanna before Fendi won her over, Brad Pitt, Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart, and Drew Barrymore. Gucci does not have any Iconic dresses, although they make great commercial designs for the runway and fashion magazines.
Versace, on the other hand, has Iconic dresses: “That dress” was a black Versace dress worn by Elizabeth Hurley. Versace also designed for famous celebrities like Elton John and Michael Jackson, royalty like the Princess of Wales and the Princess Caroline of Monaco. Another Iconic dress is the “green Versace dress” worn by Jenifer Lopez, the “green Versace dress” was voted the fifth most iconic dress as at the time, with “That dress” coming first.
GUCCI VS VERSACE: MARKET POSITION
Gucci according to Business Insider was voted the second hottest fashion brand because of its intensive marketing strategy and its ability to reach the teenage and millennial population. Gucci also embarks on several collaborations with department stores, e-commerce platforms it greatly intensifies social media marketing, these policies have given it the heart of the youth and made it a very commercial brand.
Versace has always been known to stay classy, they have not really intensified their high scale commercial marketing and so their major demand traction is from Royalty, high-brown fashionable businessmen and iconic celebrities. Versace has been known to make notable collaborations with Lamborghini in producing the Lamborghini Versace which was internally decorated with Versace apparel.
They collaborated with; Lil buck, ford motor company and the Mind Group in China (they jointly developed the Versace Residencies). Versace was voted the seventh hottest fashion brand in 2018 (according to Business Insider).
As much as we would love to compare so many features of both brands, we always like to stick to the facts and draw out our observations; Gucci is a more commercial brand and has targeted its marketing towards young people, which is a very large and competitive market. Versace, on the other hand, you can say is more classy and “royal”. The big question is: which of them is more expensive?
Our price comparison category should answer that.
