Top 10 Phone Manufacturers in The World?

I’m sure you are already drafting a list in your mind, but let me add that this rating is based on total annual shipments and global distribution not based on fancy and outstanding specifications.

Since 2018, there has been a global decline in the demand for smartphones and a concentration of the market share amongst 10 brands. Leaving a meager share for the remaining thousand out there.

Since 2011 Apple and Samsung have had a tug of war, taking more than 40% of the market share for themselves. Huawei came in 2018 to break that Jinx and overtook Apple, they are going at such a pace that analysts feel they may overtake Samsung and come in as first in 2019 if they massively produce foldable and 5G phones.

Without further Ado, we present the mobile tech’s top ten:

Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate founded by Lee Byung-chul and headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul. It has other affiliated businesses united under the Samsung brand. It is one of the largest South Korean company.

In 2013, Samsung sold a total of 444 million mobile phones in 2013 and had a market share of 24.6%. Samsung is the leading smartphone manufacturer although they are in a constant fierce fight with Huawei.

Huawei is a Chinese multinational telecommunication and consumer electronics manufacturer founded by Ren Zhengfei in 1987. Huawei witnessed an increase in sales of its mobiles phones and recently took over Apple coming in the second place after Samsung. They have had their own share of troubles and scandals but they are still making headway.

The company sold 47.28 million phones in 2012. and was the sixth largest mobile phone seller last year. Huawei is now the second largest mobile phone seller and they are growing at such a fast rate that they are currently a huge threat to Samsung should their foldable phones gain massive adoption.

Apple

Apple is one of the Big Four of technology along with Amazon, Google, and Facebook. Apple was the second largest smartphone manufacturer before Huawei took over from them.

Apple Inc. is headquartered in Cupertino, California and they major in design and sells of consumer electronics, computer software, and online services.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi is another fast-growing Chinese electronics company with its headquarters in Beijing. Xiaomi manufactures and invests in smartphones, mobile apps, laptops, and other consumer electronics products. They really have some beautiful and affordable phones and they are catching up with industry trends and specifications.

Oppo

Oppo or should we say BBK Electronics is yet another Chinese consumer electronics and telecom communications company, very known for its electronic devices, smartphones, and Blu-ray players.

BBK Electronics we mentioned earlier is the parent company of Oppo Electronics Corporation.  Oppo was founded in 2004 and the headquarters is at Dongguan, China. Oppo is a fast-growing brand and although they are not very known in Nigeria, Oppo is quite a force to reckon with around the world (India for example).

Vivo

Remember BBK Electronics? The parent company of Oppo? Well, it appears that they are parenting another powerful consumer electronics brand Vivo.

Vivo makes smartphones, smartphone accessories, software, and online services. The company was founded in 2009 in Dongguan, China.

LG

There has been a lot of Chinese consumer electronics company that made it to this list. LG, on the other hand, is a South Korean consumer electronics company with headquarters in Yeouido-dong, Seoul. The company has other local subsidiaries with over 82,000 employees around the world.

Lenovo

Lenovo PC International or Lenovo Group Ltd is a Chinese multination tech company with a very significant impact on mobile phones.

The company is not only into computing, but they also produce amazing phones. The company headquarters is in Beijing, China and Morrisville, North Carolina, United States.

And it is also very important to note that Motorolla is now a Lenovo company too.

HMD (Nokia)

Looking for a global leader in innovations such as digital health, mobile networks, and smartphones? Well, you must have heard of Nokia.

Nokia Corporation is a Finnish multinational telecommunication, information technology, and consumer electronics company with headquarters in Espoo, in the greater Helsinki metropolitan area.

Nokia may not be a heavyweight like before but the company is still a  force to reckoned with in the tech industry.

TECNO

Tecno may not have left a dent in the world, but they did dominate Africa. Their mission is actually success in North Africa, and Expansion into South America and Southeast Asia. And they are actual very successful in Africa, especially Nigeria.

Tecno Mobile is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturer which is based in Hong Kong. It was established in 2006 and the company is a subsidiary of Transsion Holdings.

OTHERS.

The ten brands mentioned above have an 80% share in the mobile phone market and reserved about 20% for others. We are hopeful that a brand from others will take a seat at the table of ten.
