Understanding Operating System.

An operating system (OS) is system software that manages your phone’s hardware and software.

It is the most important program that runs on a phone. Every phone must have an operating system. It is the main program in a phone that controls the way the phone works and makes it possible for other apps to work too.

What is iOS?

In the term iOS, the “i” stands for Internet and the “OS” stand for Operating System. Putting words together, iOS stands for Internet Operating System. iOS is what makes Apple’s mobile devices or, “iDevices”, turn on and run all the stuff you want to do with it. It’s the basic “operating system” that operates any given iDevice. It is a mobile operating system created and developed by Apple Inc. exclusively for its hardware.

What is Mobile Operating System?

A mobile operating system also called a mobile OS, is an operating system that is specifically designed to run on mobile devices such as mobile phones, smartphones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), tablet computers and other handheld devices.

Which Operating System is iOS Based?

Apple’s Mac OS X was based on NeXTStep, and iOS was based on Mac OS X.  Therefore, iOS is based on NeXTSTEP, which is an Operating System that existed long before Linux. NeXTSTEP is based on Berkeley Unix, which is also called BSD.

Unlike Android, the iPhone and iPad are completely locked down with their own BIOS and firmware, chipsets and just about everything else. iDevices can be a lot of trouble because they are completely locked down.

Unlike iOS, Android is “open” in a variety of ways. For one thing, the Android operating system is based on code from the “Android Open Source Project,” or AOSP.

It’s open-source, so people can take that source code and create custom operating systems from it.  Amazon’s Fire OS, used on the Kindle Fire and Fire Phone, is also based on this open-source Android code.

On the other hand, Apple’s iOS is closed-source. Yes, it has some open-source bits, but the vast majority of the operating system is closed-source. There’s no real possibility of making a new operating system from it.

Who Owns the iOS Operating System?

iOS is the second most popular mobile operating system globally after Android. This powerful OS is owned by Apple Inc. It is the operating system that powers many of the company’s mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Summary.

iOS mobile operating system was created and designed by Apple Inc. exclusively for its hardware. It runs on NeXTSTEP, an operating system that existed long before Linux. Apple’s iOS is currently the main software that runs on all models of the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and iPad Mini mobile devices and now the all-new Apple Watch.
